Lions are the second-largest big cat after tigers. Adult males typically weigh 150–250 kg (up to almost 550 lbs in exceptional cases) and measure 2.5–3.3 meters in length including the tail. Females are smaller, usually 120–180 kg.
The most striking feature is the male's mane — a thick fringe of hair around the head and neck that darkens with age and signals health, strength, and maturity to rivals and potential mates. Lions have a tawny/golden coat that provides excellent camouflage in dry grass. Cubs are born with spots (rosettes) that fade as they grow.
